What are import duties and how are they calculated?

Import duties are taxes imposed by your country's customs authority on goods entering the country. For vehicles imported from China, duties are calculated on the CIF value (Cost, Insurance, and Freight — the total of the vehicle price + insurance + shipping cost to your port).

Typical duty ranges by region:

  • EU: 10% standard import duty + VAT (19-27%) + possible additional tariffs on Chinese EVs [VERIFY]
  • Africa (Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, etc.): 25-50% depending on age, engine size, and local regulations
  • Middle East (UAE, Saudi Arabia): 5% import duty + VAT (5-15%) — among the lowest rates globally
